A few weeks ago I had the privilege of documenting a very special event at the Duke Mansion in Charlotte, NC. The first annual Turquoise Tasting was sponsored by LUNG FORCE to promote the awareness of lung cancer and aid in research of the disease. This event was a total eye opening experience for me. I mean, I’ve had three of my friends loose their mothers to this terrible disease at young ages, but I had no idea of the statistics and how rampant this disease truly is. Did you know that lung cancer research lags behind other major causes of death in the U.S. even though it kills more women than breast, ovarian and cervical cancers combined? Every five minutes, a woman in the U.S. is diagnosed with lung cancer and every 8 minutes, a woman dies from it. In the course of my time at the tasting, nearly 23 women had died from lung cancer. Yes, 23 women in the span of our evening together! In the last 37 years, the lung cancer death rate has risen 98 percent among women. The five-year survival rate is 17% — among the lowest for all types of cancers. We are truly facing a crisis in women’s health and it’s time that we do something about it.
The Charlotte Lung Force board is filled with some of the strongest, most determined women that I know. They have all been affected by lung cancer and are a driving force to be reckoned with! So, watch out lung cancer…they are coming for ya! The passion that these ladies put behind this event paid off with a fun-filled evening of music, mouth watering food/drink pairings, a wine pull, and auction baskets that would make your head spin! Guests enjoyed laughter and conversation and shed a few tears after hearing stories from lung cancer survivors and doctors committed to those affected by the disease. The event was a huge success and I look forward to watching it grow from year to year!
